Gaillac

Gaillac is one of France’s oldest wine regions, with roots dating back to Roman times, when wine production was introduced by legionaries in the southwest of the country. During the Middle Ages, the area was already known for its wine, which was exported via the Tarn River – long before Bordeaux rose to prominence.

The vineyards of Gaillac are spread across rolling hills with varied soil types, including limestone, clay, sand, and gravel, offering great diversity in the wines. The region benefits from a unique microclimate influenced by both Atlantic and Mediterranean conditions, which creates ideal circumstances for grape ripening.

Gaillac is particularly known for its local grape varieties, many of which are rarely found elsewhere. White wines are made from grapes such as Mauzac, Loin de l’Œil, and Ondenc, while red wines feature Duras, Braucol (also known as Fer Servadou), and Prunelart. The combination of historical tradition, varied terroir, and rare grapes makes Gaillac one of the most distinctive and versatile wine regions in France.
