In the 1970s and 1980s, Abruzzo was dominated by large wine cooperatives. Most families sold their grapes to the cooperatives, which produced affordable and cheap wines. However, in the last 20 years, family estates have started to develop and produce their own wines that emphasise organic farming and terroir. The star varieties of the region are the native red Montepulciano and the white Trebbiano.
