Giacomo Fenocchio

For over 160 years, Giacomo Fenocchio has been crafting classic, time-honored Barolos that capture the very essence of Nebbiolo. Founded in 1864 and now run by Claudio Fenocchio, the estate is known for minimal-intervention winemaking, long macerations, and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels—a throwback to the golden era of Barolo.

But what makes Fenocchio’s wines so special? Well, for one, patience is everything here. Unlike modern Barolos that often prioritize accessibility, Fenocchio embraces the old-school, slow approach—some of their wines undergo macerations of 90 days or more! This extended skin contact helps build complexity, structure, and longevity, making them perfect for long-term cellaring.

The estate owns prime vineyard sites in some of Barolo’s most legendary crus, including Bussia, Cannubi, Villero, and Castellero. Each plot brings its own unique character—Bussia’s power, Cannubi’s elegance, Villero’s depth—and Fenocchio expertly showcases these differences without excessive oak or manipulation.

Another fun fact? Claudio Fenocchio is a true traditionalist who believes that Barolo should never be rushed. He once remarked that “time is the best winemaker”—and his wines prove it. They age gracefully for decades, evolving from firm and structured to ethereal and hauntingly complex.

If you love pure, terroir-driven Barolo with history in every sip, Giacomo Fenocchio’s wines are a must-try. Just be patient—good things take time!
